Mavenir, a leading provider of cloud-native network infrastructure, has announced its role in delivering a comprehensive 5G core network for ice, Norway’s third-largest mobile operator. This deployment is set to enable a pioneering network slicing service, allowing for tailored network solutions for various users, including the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Utilising its new 5G standalone (SA) network, ice will provide a dedicated network slice specifically designed to meet the unique communication needs of the military. This slice effectively creates an isolated network within the existing infrastructure, granting the Armed Forces exclusive control and usage across the country. The solution ensures secure, end-to-end communication, crucial for military operations.

Mavenir’s 5G mobile core has been developed to assist network operators in enabling network slicing, which facilitates the delivery of bespoke services to businesses (B2B), consumers (B2C), and public organisations. These dedicated slices can be customised to meet specific requirements and deployed with ease, making it possible to launch innovative services and applications. Mavenir’s cloud-native 5G SA network is fully containerised and operates on any cloud service. This microservices architecture provides the necessary flexibility to adapt to the evolving demands of customers in a scalable manner.

Tore Kristoffersen, VP of Service Delivery Platforms at ice, expressed enthusiasm about this deployment, stating, “This deployment of network slicing is realising the true value of 5G. We now have myriad possible new business cases to present to our enterprise customers, which can be tailored to precise service level agreements, ensuring the best and most cost-effective use of resources. We are also testing solutions for use in Public Safety services, highlighting the value of 5G and its network slicing capabilities for secure critical communications.”

Ashok Khuntia, President of Core Networks at Mavenir, emphasised the significance of network slicing for mobile operators, saying, “The flexibility of network slicing powered by 5G is a game-changer. We are enabling 5G use cases in practice, proving that the long-promised monetisation of 5G is a reality. With security, reliability, and low latency, 5G presents a tremendous opportunity for the industry. We are delighted to extend our strategic partnership with ice by supporting this first deployment in Norway.”

This collaboration follows ice’s previous selection of Mavenir’s Cloud-Native IMS and Messaging/VAS solutions as part of a strategic expansion. The partnership aims to enhance ice’s network capabilities, leveraging Mavenir’s Converged Packet Core solution to power both its 4G and 5G networks.

The deployment marks a significant milestone for both Mavenir and ice, as they work together to harness the potential of 5G technology in Norway, paving the way for a new era of connectivity that meets the demands of diverse sectors, including public safety and military communications.
