South Lakes Citizens Advice seeks volunteers to meet demand

South Lakes Citizens Advice is appealing for volunteers as it faces unprecedented demand for its services, which provide essential support to families grappling with financial difficulties. Based in Kendal, with additional offices in Ulverston and a community drop-in session in Windermere, the charity is part of a national network dedicated to helping those in need.

Recent data indicates that more families are struggling with monthly bills, leading to a growing deficit between income and expenses. This financial strain has a significant impact on physical and mental wellbeing, making the work of Citizens Advice more vital than ever.

Karen Evans, Chief Officer at South Lakes Citizens Advice, emphasised the importance of the charity’s services. “We’re the only charity to offer a free, confidential and comprehensive advice service on a wide range of topics, including debt, welfare benefits, employment, housing, and relationships,” she stated. “We act as a vital first port of call for individuals in crisis, guiding them through their problems and facilitating referrals to specialist caseworkers in Money Advice and Welfare Benefits.”

Despite being a crucial resource in the community, South Lakes Citizens Advice operates without government funding, relying entirely on grants and donations to sustain its services. “Thanks to our work, we generate more money back into the local community than we receive, several times over,” Karen noted, highlighting the charity’s positive impact on the region’s economy.

The charity recently moved to a new location in Wainwright’s Yard in Kendal, thanks to a generous offer from Newsquest, publishers of the Westmorland Gazette. This move aims to make the charity more accessible to those in need, particularly as enquiries reached a record high in 2023 and continue to increase.

To manage this rising demand, South Lakes Citizens Advice is urgently seeking more volunteers to support its operations. Karen reassured potential volunteers that many roles are available beyond providing direct advice, which can often deter individuals from applying. “Roles can include administration, office assistance, fundraising, research, and campaign work,” she explained. “Our minimum requirement is just six hours per week, and we can be very flexible. Volunteers will receive full training, support, and travel expenses.”

Volunteering offers a range of benefits, including the opportunity to make new friends, engage in social activities, and develop skills that can enhance career prospects or daily life. “We know there are many people in our community who could help us make a difference,” Karen added. “If that’s you, please give us a call on 015394 47185 to discuss available roles or visit our website at www.southlakescab.org.uk to complete an online application.”

South Lakes Citizens Advice is located at 1 Wainwright’s Yard, Kendal, LA9 4DP. For general advice enquiries, individuals can ring the charity’s free number at 0808 2787984 to arrange telephone or face-to-face appointments. Open drop-in sessions are available every Tuesday and Thursday from 10.00am to 2.00pm, providing an additional avenue for community members to access support. As the charity gears up to tackle increasing challenges, the call for volunteers is an opportunity for locals to make a meaningful impact in their community.
