Christmas Connectivity: Top Tips for a Smooth Holiday Season

As UK households prepare for the festive season, reliable internet has become as essential as turkey and tinsel for many families. Zen Internet, one of the country’s leading broadband providers, is sharing its top five tips to ensure families stay connected throughout Christmas, without any connectivity hiccups.

Dean Burdon, Customer Experience Director at Zen Internet, explained that in 2024, the average UK household now has around nine connected devices, with larger families using up to 16. With more homes relying on high-speed broadband to power everything from smart TVs to home automation systems, it’s clear that the internet has become central to many Christmas traditions.

“Connectivity has evolved into an essential part of modern festive celebrations,” Burdon said. “From streaming Christmas classics to following online recipes for festive dinners and even controlling Christmas lights through smart gadgets, reliable internet is key to making sure families can enjoy the full Christmas experience.”

However, with more gadgets competing for bandwidth and families coming together to share the festivities, it’s no surprise that Christmas Day can be one of the busiest for broadband networks. Zen Internet has outlined practical advice for households to ensure their internet runs smoothly, helping them avoid frustrations during their holiday celebrations.

Zen’s Top Five Tips for Seamless Internet This Christmas

    1. Keep your router in the open
Positioning your router in a central, open location can help ensure a strong signal throughout your home. Avoid placing it inside cupboards or behind furniture, as this can interfere with the signal. Keeping the router near your master socket with a clear line of sight will help minimise disruptions.
    2. Minimise interference from other devices
Common household devices like microwaves, Bluetooth gadgets, and cordless phones can interfere with your Wi-Fi, particularly on the 2.4GHz frequency. To avoid these disruptions, place your router away from these appliances.
    3. Use wired connections where possible
For devices that don’t need to move, such as desktop computers, game consoles, and smart TVs, use Ethernet cables to connect them directly to your router. This will ensure a more stable connection and free up your Wi-Fi for other devices.
    4. Prioritise key devices
Check how many devices are connected to your network and disconnect any that aren’t in use. Access your router’s control panel to manage connected devices, and consider disabling automatic updates on your devices to save bandwidth for more important tasks.
    5. Boost your Wi-Fi signal
Consider boosting your Wi-Fi network with tools like powerline adapters or Wi-Fi extenders, which help increase the range of your network. For optimal coverage, mesh network systems, like Zen’s EveryRoom, are an excellent option, providing seamless connectivity without the hassle of multiple networks.

Burdon further added that fast and reliable internet is vital not just for keeping in touch with loved ones but also for managing the many smart home devices that are becoming increasingly common. “Wi-Fi now powers heating, lighting, and security systems, ensuring families are comfortable and safe throughout the winter months,” he said.

At Zen Internet, providing reliable connectivity during peak times like Christmas is a top priority. “Our mission is to keep homes connected, entertained, and secure so families can focus on making memories without worrying about their broadband,” Burdon concluded.

With these tips in mind, UK households can avoid connectivity disruptions and enjoy a seamless, tech-friendly Christmas. For more broadband tips and advice, visit www.zen.co.uk.
